Ann Martin

"The team I trusted with my heart"

Last spring, Ann Martin learned she needed to have a procedure to remove blockages in her arteries. It didn't take her long to choose interventional cardiologist Dr. Deepak Banerjee and Sovah Health - Martinsville for the procedure.

"My primary care physician wanted to send me to Roanoke for the surgery, but I decided to come here because I felt like family would be here."

Ann had confidence in Sovah Health - Martinsville, and not just because her daughter works in the outpatient surgery department. Having lived in Martinsville for over thirty years, Ann had grown to know and trust many of the physicians and staff at the hospital.

"I knew these were all very competent people. I trusted them."

One of the advantages of being treated at a smaller community hospital, as opposed to a larger teaching hospital, is that you truly feel the caring, family atmosphere, she says.

"And that's exactly what I got from the time I checked into the hospital until the time I checked out."

On May 1 of last year, Ann headed into surgery.

"I never was afraid...I just needed reassurance. Dr. Banerjee and the cath lab staff kept me briefed the entire time. Sharri Love (RN in the Cath Lab) said, 'You're going to be just fine. We are going to make sure that we take the best care of you.' Their presence gave me the security I needed to get through the operation."

"One thing that was very important to me is that they kept me briefed throughout the procedure. Dr. Banerjee was in charge, and it was clear that he knew what he was doing."

Since the operation last spring, Ann is doing great. She is following Dr. Banerjee's advice, going in for regular checkups, following a heart healthy diet and has quit smoking.

She credits her physician and her community hospital for saving her life.

"I can say that someone actually saved my life. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Deepak Banerjee and this hospital. And that's why I feel like more people should come to this hospital for procedures, especially if they have a problem related to their heart.

This community is so lucky to have such a remarkable hospital with excellent physicians, staff and services, and we should support it as much as we can."
