Memorial Hospital Announces 2015 Nurse of Excellence Award

Martinsville, Va. (May 7, 2015) – On Wednesday, May 6, Memorial Hospital hosted its second annual Nurse of Excellence Awards to recognize exceptional nurses across thirteen different departments, and name the 2015 Nurse of Excellence Award. Michael Ehrat, Chief Executive Officer, and Michele Pilon, Chief Nursing Officer, of Memorial Hospital opened the reception. 

“Nursing excellence attributes include providers of outstanding care, lifelong learner, problem solver, superior communicator, team player, and patient advocate”, said Pilon. “And each of our nominees should be commended and proud of this honor, as they truly exude these qualities.”

Department winners were selected by their peers and directors, based on several criteria: 1) demonstrated excellence; 2) contribution to the nursing profession; 3) contribution to improve patient care; and 4) positive professional influence, guidance, and support of peers. 

The department winners and nominees for this year’s overall award were Carole Salmons (Surgical Services), Brad Shelton (Emergency Department), Pam Anderson (Medical/Surgical), Zandra Hall (Women’s Center), Billy Lyons (Behavioral Health), Cindy Roach (Oncology), Susan Henderson (Cath Lab, Stress Lab, Wound Care, and Cardiac Rehab), Valerie Laufenberg (Martinsville Physician Practices), Whitney Dillon (Critical Care Unit), Ellen Bell (Telemetry), Janet Cole (HomeCare), Tammy Pollock (Quality and Case Management), and Janine Wise (Information Systems, Radiology, Employee Health, Patient Education, and PICC). 

Christy Stutts, Director of Surgical Services, and Pilon presented the 2015 Nursing Excellence Award to Carole Salmons, RN (Surgical Services). “When you observe Carole caring for her patients, it is very clear that she puts the needs of her patients first and foremost above everything else” said Stutts. “Carole is greatly admired and respected by all because she is the epitome of a great nurse.”
