Memorial Hospital Welcomes New Industrial Rehab Director

August 3, 2015

Martinsville, Va. (August 3, 2015) – Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County (MHMHC) today announced that Michael Palmer has joined its staff as a physical therapist for the new Center for Industrial Rehab and Sports Medicine, a division of Rehabilitation Services at the hospital. Palmer will direct the new industrial rehab program, which will work with local businesses and industry to reduce employment costs and enable workers to better tackle physically demanding tasks. The Center will provide pre-employment screenings, job-site analysis, office ergonomics, functional capacity evaluations, work hardening, work conditioning, and injury prevention education.

“Michael is the perfect person to head our new industrial rehab program here at the hospital,” said Chip Miller, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Memorial Hospital. “Not only has Michael been a physical therapist for over twenty years, but he has a strong management background and experience working in many different rehab settings.”

Most recently, Palmer was a physical therapist for Gentiva Health Services in Lynchburg, VA. Prior to that position, he worked as Director of Rehabilitation for HCR Manor Care, also in Lynchburg. Palmer holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology from University of Maryland (College Park, MD) and obtained his Master of Physical Therapy from Rutgers University (Camden, NJ).

Palmer is eager to get to work and thinks the new industrial rehab program makes a lot of sense for Martinsville and Henry County.  “We have many members of the local workforce who are actively engaged in bending, twisting and lifting for a significant portion of their workday. These activities are very similar to that of an athlete,” said Palmer. “It is time that these ‘industrial athletes’, receive the same level of advanced care as professional athletes in order to prevent pain and injury.”
