March 1, 2019

MARTINSVILLE, Virginia, March 1, 2019 -- Sovah Health announced today the opening of a new inpatient joint and orthopedics unit at Sovah Health – Martinsville. The 10-bed unit, located on the second floor of the hospital, welcomed its first patients on Tuesday, February 19. An official ribbon cutting was held on Monday, February 25 with the joint and orthopedic team.

“The opening of this new unit is a dream come true,” said orthopedic surgeon Uosife Alfahd, MD. “Not only does the opening of this unit expand our capacity so we are able to care for more surgical patients, but also it translates to enhanced continuity of care and patient satisfaction.”

Staffed by nurses with specialized training and experience in orthopedics, the new unit will primarily serve patients enrolled in the hospital’s total joint replacement program Race to Relief. A patient-focused personalized experience for joint replacement of the hips, knees and shoulders, Race to Relief was launched with the arrival of Dr. Alfahd, an orthopedic and total joint surgeon, in 2017. To date, the unit has cared for 15 patients in the program.

“The feedback from our patients so far has been extremely positive,” said total joint program coordinator Susanne Washburn, RN. “The patients love the new unit and the individualized care and attention they receive from our team.”
