Clinical Trials

Sovah Ravenel Cancer Center is a charter member of the Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium (SCOR) and is one of 91 communities across 5 states who participate in clinical trials. We offer hope to our patients through excellence in care based on current research. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines (NCCN) are utilized to guide cancer care in facilities across the country no matter where you go. Nutrition Services

Nutrition health is an important factor for patients undergoing treatment for cancer. Cancer and its treatments can affect how the body is able to utilize nutrients, including changes in appetite. Eating a healthy diet during cancer treatments can help patients feel better, maintain strength and body weight, have a better tolerance of treatment side effects and recover faster. Nutrition Services is here to provide support to cancer patients and their families by providing nutrition assessments, education about nutrition and cancer, and developing nutritional plans.

Social Services

Sovah Ravenel Cancer Center has a dedicated on-site social worker who works with patients, the hospital and community agencies to support the needs and care plan of the patient and their family. The social worker meets with all self-pay patients to review all options for both the patient and the organization. If the patient has a Cancer diagnosis, eligibility requirements for all programs are determined and the patient is referred to our in house Med Assistance program. This program assesses the patient to see if they qualify for disability or Medicaid. 

Rehabilitative Services

Cancer and its treatment can cause debilitating side effects for patients, compromising their function and quality of life. Physical, occupational or speech therapy, depending on specific deficits therapy during and after cancer treatment can help speed functional recovery, boost immune response, reduce fatigue and reduce risk of complications in people of any age.

Patients undergoing cancer treatment may experience one or more of the following side effects:

  • Pain
  • Decreased muscle strength
  • Decreased bone density
  • Peripheral neuropathy related to chemotherapy
  • Fatigue
  • Lymphedema or swelling disorders
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Formation of scar tissue
  • Postural changes
  • Muscle imbalances

In conjunction with your medical team, the therapist works with patients and caregivers to maximize their physical abilities and comfort levels to ensure the most effective recovery. Learn more about outpatient services available through the Sovah Rehabilitation Center.

Pastoral Care

Sovah Health - Martinsville provides the following pastoral care services to patients, family or staff, regardless of race, religion or gender:

  • Confidentiality and respectful interaction
  • Routine visits to inpatients with cancer
  • Visits, as referred, to inpatient oncology patients with a new diagnosis
  • Visits with patients and families during palliative care, comfort care, and the process of dying

These pastoral visits include one or more of the following:

  • Informal spiritual assessments, empathetic listening, prayer, sacramental care (if requested), presence
  • Education regarding advance directives, Medical Power of Attorney, end of life plans
  • Connection with personal Pastor as requested

Home Health & Hospice

Sovah Hospice has provided compassionate, end-of-life care to thousands of patients across our region. Legacy Hospice of the Piedmont patients receive care in the home. Home environments include private residences, as well as, independent, assisted and nursing home facilities. The hospice team includes nursing, social work, chaplaincy, hospice aides, trained volunteers and physicians. Home hospice services provide pain control and symptom management to patients and support to their families. Medical equipment, supplies, medications and caregiver training are additional services provided in the hospice benefit. Learn more about home health and hospice services.
